For about a month now, Star Clipper has been featuring graphic novels from the New York Times Graphic Book Best Seller lists. Though surrounded by a little controversy centered around how the New York Times was getting its data, the list provided an interesting look at which graphic novels were making it big. As I was setting up the latest display, an idea dawned on me: why not make the display for Star Clipper’s best selling books and graphic novels instead of the New York Times! Through the magic of our POS, MOBY, in mere moments I had a list of the best selling books in hand and was ready to create a list that reflected what were the big sellers around Star Clipper. Here is a quick look at the list:
1. Little Lulu TP Vol. 19: Alamo & Other Stories
2. Path of the Assassin TP Vol. 15: Bad Blood Part 2
3. Batman R.I.P. Deluxe Edition HC
4. B.P.R.D. TP Vol. 10: The Warning
5. Green Lantern Chronicles TP Vol. 1
6. Green Lantern Sinestro Corps War TP Vol. 1
7. Project Superpowers TP Vol. 1
8. Resurrection TP Vol. 1
9. Scalped TP Vol 4: The Grave in Your Guts
10. Watchmen TP
The first Star Clipper Best Seller’s list runs the week starting Wednesday April 29 and runs until Tuesday May 5 and it contains a number of surprises. The top selling book on the list may be its most shocking member. Who would have guessed that “Little Lulu TP Vol. 19: Alamo & Other Stories” would beat out all other titles for top the week’s list? I’ve known that the classic all-ages antics of Lulu Moppet and friends had a strong following among Star Clipper regulars, but I never suspected that it was strong enough to put Little Lulu at the head of pack. The list’s second place title, “Path of the Assassin TP Vol. 15: Bad Blood Part,” made another surprise ranking. Like, Little Lulu, “Path of the Assassin” possesses a loyal fan base and their need to pick up the series final volume placed it near the head of the list. The third spot on the list falls to the “Batman R.I.P. Deluxe Edition HC.” While the R.I.P. storyline has its controversies, the hardcover release of the storyline has done surprisingly well at Star Clipper in the almost three months since its release. Star Clipper’s FCBD sale on hardcover books surely gave this collection the nudge it needed to place so high on the list, but its hard to deny that readers are interested in last year’s biggest Batman storyline.
“Little Lulu,” “Path of the Assassin,” and “Batman R.I.P.” all unequivocally hold each of their respective spots on the list. The next seven, however, share the same quantity sold for the week, so their placements are rather arbitrary on the list. A special note, however, should be made about “Scalped Vol. 4” as it was the top selling graphic novel at Star Clipper for the entire month of April! The last spot, given to the “Watchmen TP,” is even a little more arbitrary. Due to the previously mentioned FCBD sale, 30 books were tied for the number ten spot on the list. “Watchmen” has done so well for us in the last year, I thought that it deserved to take last spot on the list.
For the foreseeable future, Star Clipper’s Besting Selling Graphic Novels list will be updated in the store every Wednesday with a display filled with chart topping books. I feel like the first list does a descent job of capturing the array of interests of Star Clipper’s diverse clientele. Future lists should deliver as many surprises as this first one and show us all what variety of titles people really are going crazy for down here on the Loop.

One of my favorite bookstores in St. Louis. Star Clipper offers not only the best selection of comic books and graphic novels in the city, but also a cornucopia of art, design and pop-culture related books and magazines.
